Housing Development

Through creative approaches to funding and strategic collaborations with area communities and other non-profit organizations, MHA has created a diverse housing pipeline of projects in Fairfield County. These projects address a range of housing needs including affordable homeownership, rental, senior and supportive housing units. Since its founding, MHA has grown to become one of Fairfield County's most active producers of affordable housing with over 460 completed housing units and over 150 new units in development, representing a total of $100 million in community investment.

Projects in Development

Fairfield Commons

Fairfield Commons is collaboration between MHA and Laurel House to create a 33-unit supportive housing units on Fairfield Avenue in Stamford. To date, there are 19 units with 12 new units to be constructed in two phases. Laurel House has an office at Fairfield Commons and provides case management services. When all the phases are completed, Fairfield Commons will create a supportive housing "village" with a central green or "commons" linked to the new community/service space to be created in the existing structures at center of the site. The plan will also create a centrally located parking area and areas designated for pick-up and drop-off for transportation services. Wilton Commons

Wilton Commons, a 51 unit senior housing community is planned for a 4.8 acre site in Wilton known as the Dana Property being sponsored by Wilton Commons, Inc. (WCI) and MHA. Funding for Wilton Commons will come from many sources including contributions from private organizations and local Wilton residents totaling $2 million. The Town of Wilton is also a committed partner in Wilton Commons, providing the site for Wilton Commons on a long-term lease for $1 – a commitment valued at over $2.5 million.

Darien Library

MHA was selected by the town of Darien as developer for the Darien Library project. Twenty one affordable condominium units will be created in an adaptive reuse of a former library with complementing new construction.

West Side Commons II

10 new condominium units are being developed for purchase by households with incomes below 60% of the Area Median Income in Stamford. Construction has begun and occupancy is planned for summer 2010. (Please see photo and full West Side Commons description in “Communities” section of the website).

Stamford Neighborhood Stabilization Program

The City of Stamford is providing capital funds for acquisition and rehabilitation of foreclosed properties. The city has committed $2,017,200 for acquisition and rehabilitation. MHA is working with the city to acquire properties and coordinate rehabilitation. When renovation is completed, the properties will be sold to low and moderate income households.

Friendship House, Stamford. Renovation of 121 units of affordable rental housing located on Perry Street in Stamford's West Side neighborhood.

With Habitat for Humanity

West Main Street, Stamford. 8 new affordable condominium units now under construction adjacent to Parkside Commons.
William Street, Bridgeport. 12 affordable condominium units in a series of renovated historic row houses along William Street.

With Bridgeport Neighborhood Trust

101 Barnum Avenue and 11 Armstrong Place. Six homeownership units in two historic structures in Bridgeport's Washington Park neighborhood.
