Our Mission
The mission of the Mutual Housing Association of Southwestern Connecticut, Inc. (MHA) is to create affordable housing opportunities, revitalize urban neighborhoods, and help people achieve economic self-sufficiency. MHA seeks to create a continuum of housing opportunities for all sectors of the community including families, seniors and people with special needs in Fairfield County. Beyond housing, MHA seeks to provide people with the skills to achieve financial stability and the American dream of homeownership through education, financial assistance and increasingly, foreclosure prevention counseling.

MHA’s comprehensive programs and services create affordable housing solutions and improve the quality of life for those most in need in Fairfield County – one of the most expensive housing markets in the country. MHASWCT’s programs are focused around 3 activities or business lines:

  • Affordable Housing Development – MHA is Fairfield County’s most active non-profit developer has completed 472 units of affordable housing in several communities throughout the county with 252 units currently in development.  These development projects will offer a range of housing options including homeownership, rental, senior and supportive housing for people with special needs.

  • Homeownership Services –As a HUD and CHFA approved homebuyer education and foreclosure prevention counseling agency, MHA is able to offer a “one-stop-shop” for homebuyers and homeowners in Fairfield County, including homebuyer education and credit counseling, down payment assistance, and the services of MHA Realty, a not for profit real estate broker.  MHA helps homeowners stay in their homes with low cost loans and technical assistance for repairs or renovations, and provides foreclosure prevention counseling through clinics and individual counseling assistance.

  • Property Management and Resident Services – As important as the creation of new units is the preservation of existing affordable housing. MHA provides property management services to over $48 million in affordable housing assets representing 419 units of safe, secure, affordable housing for over 1,000 residents of Fairfield County. MHA’s trained staff provides accounting and financial reporting, tax credit compliance, as well as maintenance and emergency response services.  MHA’s residents receive comprehensive support services in partnership with providers such as Laurel House and Catholic Charities at locations in Stamford and Bridgeport CT.
